It’s just a markdown editor.
Until it isn’t.

Write markdown on the left, watch it come to life on the right. Every word stays on your device, no account, no cloud, no subscription.

Free on Chrome, Edge & Firefox · One-time $5 on Mac, iPad, iPhone & Safari

Markdown Editor in its night theme: markdown source and toolbar on the left, live preview on the right, pet cat at the bottom.
Not a mockup, the actual editor, night theme, pet cat on duty.

Everything you need.
Nothing to set up.

Live preview

GitHub-flavored rendering as you type, tables, task lists, footnotes, front matter, and synced scrolling.

Toolbar & shortcuts

Bold, italic, links, and lists in one tap, or ⌘B, ⌘I, and ⌘K when your hands never leave the keys.

Version history

Automatic snapshots while you write. The paragraph you deleted an hour ago is two clicks from home.

Find & replace

⌘F through long documents with match case, then replace one match or every match at once.

Outline

Every heading in a sidebar, so a 5,000-word document feels as small as a note.

Templates & smart paste

Start from a README or meeting notes, and anything pasted from the web becomes clean markdown.

Math & diagrams

KaTeX equations and Mermaid flowcharts render right in the preview, your thesis and your architecture doc, both covered.

Goals & focus

Word goals with a progress ring, reading time, a WPM meter, and typewriter scrolling that keeps your cursor centered.

Beautiful exports

Download .md, print, export themed HTML, back everything up as a .zip, or send a doc to ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity.

$5 once on Apple devices

Native Mac, iPad & iPhone app with the Safari extension included. One purchase, no subscription, yours forever.

2025.1.26  January 26, 2025

The fun one

The era of themes and toys: eight color themes and the chaos zone grew up here, the pet cat, Matrix rain, vaporwave mode, the combo counter, typewriter sounds, and friends, alongside a long tail of preview and performance polish.

1.2  October 26, 2024

The beginning

A fast, private markdown editor with live GitHub-flavored preview, offline documents that never leave your device, and one-click HTML export. Small, quick, and quietly determined to stay that way.

Questions & answers

Is Markdown Editor free?
The browser extension is completely free on Chrome, Edge, and Firefox, every feature included. On Apple devices, the Mac, iPad, and iPhone app (which includes the Safari extension) is a single $5 purchase. No subscription, ever.
Do all platforms really get the same features?
Yes, it’s a house rule. Every feature ships on every platform: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, Mac, iPad, and iPhone. If something can’t work everywhere, we don’t ship it anywhere.
Does it work offline?
Completely. Everything runs locally, you can write a novel on a plane with airplane mode on. Nothing about the editor needs the internet.
Where are my documents stored?
On your own device, in the browser’s or app’s local storage. Nothing is uploaded and there’s no account. You can download any document as a .md file, or back up your entire library as a .zip, whenever you want.
What flavor of markdown is supported?
GitHub-flavored markdown, tables, task lists, strikethrough, plus footnotes, front matter, highlights, KaTeX math equations, and Mermaid diagrams.
What languages is it available in?
Seventy, every language the Chrome Web Store supports, from Arabic to Zulu, each one hand-translated rather than machine-dumped.
OK, but what is the chaos zone?
A drawer of completely optional toys hiding in Settings: a pet cat that wanders your screen, Matrix rain, vaporwave mode, a fighting-game combo counter, typewriter sounds, emoji rain, a rage-quit alarm, and more. Everything is off by default. We just believe software is allowed to be fun.

Cat sold separately. Kidding, she’s included.
